Cellulite Be Gone!
Cellulite is a recent addition to the English language. In fact, it is not a medical term at all. It’s a term used to describe the way your body appears when adipose tissue forms lobular formations just under the surface of the skin. In plain English the “cottage cheese look” or dimpling that occurs primarily on your thighs, legs and buttocks is a type of fatty tissue.
Because the tissue forms in a “lump” close to the surface of the skin it gives it a very uneven and dimpled appearance. It is not medically harmful and it does not cause health problems. What it does do is cause you to feel less attractive when you wear your bathing suit. One myth about cellulite is that it is only obese people who suffer from it. The truth is that skinny people have cellulite too.
Cellulite is primarily a cultural and cosmetic issue. Society thinks that smooth, unblemished skin is part of what makes people attractive. People with cosmetic blemishes such as acne scars, burn scars, cellulite or even birthmarks are seen as less attractive. The psychological and emotional turmoil that this can cause in a society that demands the appearance of physical perfection can be very damaging.
Can we do anything about cellulite? Exercise and keeping your body toned and in shape have been shown to have a positive impact on the appearance of the skin. A diet that is balanced and wholesome has been shown to have benefits also. Hydration and maintaining a proper fluid balance in your body are also part of the solution.
Staying in shape, eating right and staying hydrated are good for self esteem, decreasing negative energy and promoting a positive body image. Changing your perception about yourself may be one of the best things you can do to help with unwanted cellulite.
A lot of products and devices are on the market that propose to help with eliminating cellulite. Many of them do not have scientific evidence to prove they are effective. Some may even be harmful if you are allergic to the ingredients. The methods used to prove effectiveness are time consuming, expensive at times and often not understood by the marketers trying to get a product to the consumer.
The best way to find effective products and devices when there is a lack scientific proof is to find people who have used the products or devices and ask them if they worked. A good question to ask is “how long did it take to see results?” and “did the cream cause a rash?” In the case of devices the most obvious question would be “did it hurt?”
In summary, that lumpy appearance on your body called cellulite is a normal part of your body just as a mole or a freckle might be. It isn’t medically harmful but may make you feel uncomfortable about your body image. It can be reduced or eliminated but you will have to work for it. Some products or devices might be helpful but many are not.
Hoodia Diet Pills
Hoodia Gordonii is a succulent plant that grows widely is Kalahari Desert of Southern Africa. The San Bushmen, who live on the fringes of the desert, eat this plant to suppress hunger when they go on long hunting trips.
CSIR, the South African Research Institution, realized the importance of this plant and investigated it. They isolated a long molecule, P 57, that actually suppressed hunger. The patent was sold to a British company called Phytopharm. Phytopharm in turn teamed up with Pfizer to produce a synthetic pill containing P 57.
Phytopharm conducted clinical trials, first with rats and then with humans. They claim that the Hoodia powder, 400 mg, taken for 15 days reduced calorie intake by 1,000, compared to control group. As Pfizer could not produce synthetic P 57 economically, Phytopharm arranged for cultivation of the Hoodia plant in the Kalahari Desert, and set as its target to market the product by the year 2008. The plant takes five to seven years to be ready.

What Is The Hoodia Plant?
Hoodia is a prickly plant called a succulent, which closely resembles the cactus family. Bearing large odorous blooms, the hoodia plant has been used for ages by the San tribe of South Africa. The San people, also commonly known as bushmen, use hoodia by chewing on the root during long desert trips.
The appetite suppressant qualities of the hoodia plant were discovered by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, or CSIR, in 1996. The CSIR were performing a study of the natural foods eaten by the bushmen and
happened to discover the amazing potential the hoodia plant offered regarding weight loss. Hoodia was first tested by being fed to animals, who lost weight after eating it.
In 1997, the Council was able to isolate the specific ingredient found in hoodia that caused the weight loss. They licensed the patent for this ingredient to the Phytopharm company, who named it P57. Currently
Phytopharm is working to develop energy bars and drinks than contain hoodia.
These products are estimated to hit the market in 2008.
Currently the only real hoodia legally available is grown by the San people in South Africa, who recieve compensation from all sales of their hoodia
plants. If you purchase hoodia that comes from anywhere else, it is not guaranteed to be authentic or effective, and may even be illegal or counterfeit.

Slim Evidence for Effectiveness of Cellulite Treatments
By Jacob Goldstein
Plenty of people would be glad to take your money and give you cellulite treatments. But there’s not much high-quality evidence that the effects of any treatment will last more than a few hours or days, the WSJ reports.
Most treatments use some kind of massager that makes the tissue swell. The temporary swelling eliminates the dimples that characterize cellulite. But when the swelling goes down, the dimples come back.
FDA approval for the devices used in the treatments is based only on fleeting results; the agency doesn’t evaluate how long the change lasts.
New treatments add a laser or some other energy source that’s supposed to have an effect on the fat cells under the skin, but there’s no proof that this improves long-term outcomes.
“There’s nothing that has been shown in any objective way to create improvement for cellulite,” Robert A. Weiss, president-elect of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, told the WSJ.

The Opinion Page – Eat Crap Die Young
Well it’s been a brief hiatus while I decided what to do with this blog. Sure – recipes are good, but who really reads them?? You can pretty much find a recipe for anything anywhere these days – and all for free. Thank god for the internet.
I thought I’d have some more fun by sharing my opinions on health and wellness issues. And maybe a recipe or two along the way.
Do you know when”wellness” first appeared in the oxford dictionary only. Me either – but I’m trying to find out! We spend billions of dollars and hours of time trying to “be well”. The truth is that being well is not as complicated as its made out to be. But our society chooses to make it extremely complicated.
Just this week I spent over 0 in must-have vitamins and minerals. I should tell you that my health and weight are good, and I am suffering from no discernable illnesses. I am singlehandedly supporting the supplement industry. That makes me a dummy, and yet, I still do it.
I’ve got a lot more to say on this topic…..And here’s a blog with a whole lot more to say about every supplement and vitamin under the sun….Over the next few weeks I’m going to make a list of all the supplements recommended by all the experts from whom I’ve bought recipe and health books. Let’s see what it would really cost to ingest all the things they recommend for me.

Need a detox juice?
Well it’s after Christmas now, and I for one need to deflate the tyre that appeared around my stomach over the Christmas period.
Now this drink won’t win any awards for sweetness, but it sure will give your body the detox it needs (and Goldie Hawn swears by it so it must be good).
By the way, you actually need a juicer raher than a blender for this one. You can throw all the ingredients in a blender, but it’s pretty lumpy. If you don’t mind lumpy – go for it!
This drink takes anything green that you have, and juices it all up for a mega dose of chlorophyll and antioxidants. Use whatever you have – as long as it’s green, it’s good!
Here’s what I had in mine today….
Ultimate Detoxer
- 1 celery stalk (including leaves)
- 1 good handful parsley (continental is best – stems and all)
- chunk of cucumber
- handful of green beans
- 1 carrot (OK, I know it’s not green)
- 1 knob of fresh ginger (no more than 1 cm, or it’s too much)
- Half cup sparkly mineral water (to dilute)
Juice the lot, add the mineral water and drink, feeling very smug about how you are taking care of yourself.

Smoothies not Sodas
It’s official, the western world is a nation of fizzy drink consumers.
Carbonated drinks contain the equivalent of up to 10 teaspoons of sugar – that’s why we are all getting fatter.
So give the fizzy drink a miss – have a smoothie instead. It’s actually good for you. Today’s recipe celebrates the humble kiwi fruit.
- 1 kiwi fruit, peeled and chopped
- half cup low fat vanilla yogurt
- 1 cup low fat milk of your choice
- half frozen banana
- half cup crushed ice
Blend and enjoy!
