It Happened This Week: Family Tension, Emotional Eating & Heartbreaking News about Little Girls

1076950_24281504Tara Parker-Pope wowed  us again this week with a great article in the New York Times on family criticisms about what we choose to eat and how much. A great read for anyone anticipating a lot of family gatherings in the coming weeks.

As we enter the holidays, here’s more support for mindful eating as a great strategy:  Eating quickly curtails the production of hormones that signal satiety.  We’ve found, however, that many women have trouble recognizing or trusting those signals, even when they do eat slowly.  If this sounds like you,  maybe our article on mindful eating can help.

If emotional eating is your challenge, consider this:  A study at Laval University in Quebec showed food intake in response to feelings was significantly lower in women who focused on a healthy lifestyle, size acceptance and non-dieting, instead of weight loss.  Hey, that’s the Green Mountain approach!  It’s called Health at Every Size (HAES).

The researcher in the above study commented that the results of her study suggest that the HAES approach could be a good strategy for preventing weight gain.  Clearly something to consider as a study at University of Central Florida showed that almost half of 3-to-6 year-old girls in the study said they worried about being  fat.  If we are what we think, and there’s plenty to say we are, it’s time to change this attitude, not only for these little girls but for the health of the nation.  Fat phobia and the resultant misguided weight control strategies that people get caught up in puts health at risk as well as increases likelihood of weight gain that’s not healthy.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving turkeyI’ve been up since early morn.  It’s 11:00 and the turkey is already cooked. We’re getting ready to start prepping the rest of the meal — two kinds of stuffing, one gluten-free and one my traditional cornbread dressing; quinoa with roasted butternut squash; baked sweet potatoes (this year we’re tossing them in olive oil and kosher salt and baking whole); mashed potatoes; gravy; fresh cranberry sauce; roasted brussels sprouts; smashed broccoli and fresh fruit salad.  Sounds like a lot to cook but as it’s so traditional, I can almost do it without thinking.  Also sounds like a lot to eat, but we’ll be eating it again later tonight.  And for a few days — as long as it holds out.  No one minds that!

Our sincere wishes for a happy day spent with family and friends today, being grateful for all we have.  Our other tradition is to go around the table having everyone say what they’re thankful for.  One big thing we’re grateful for is to have all this wonderfully healthy food to share with our family, eating it in a way that makes us feel great, not getting caught up in weight worries.  And grateful that there is a strong movement afoot to help people move away from restricted notions of eating, so that we can all enjoy our special times (and not so special times, too) without unnecessary anxiety or guilt.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Four Things I Learned At Green Mountain At Fox Run

After living, participating, and working at Green Mountain at Fox Run for three months, my time here is coming to an end. This time next week I will be on my way back to Memphis to start the next phase of my life. Leaving Green Mountain will be a bittersweet experience for sure as I’ve grown comfortable here and come to call much of the staff and participants my friends. But everything in life has its time and knowing how and when to move on is a positive trait. I’m not sure what comes next for me, but I’m positive that this experience was one of the best I will have.

I’ve learned a lot while living here in Vermont. I’d like to share a few of those things with you.

Getting out into nature is vital. There are a lot of hikes, walks, and adventures out into the woods and mountains of Vermont on the schedule here. Every day there is an opportunity to spend at least some time outside exploring the world. At home I would easily say it’s too hot/cold/rainy/windy/cloudy for a walk outside. I let excuses stop me from enjoying fresh air and exercise – two things my body desperately needs. After spending three months here walking in EVERY kind of weather, I don’t think that will be a problem any longer.

Exercise is fun. To be honest, I already knew this one. I’ve been active a long time. But this is one thing that most women who come here learn and it is a joy to watch them do it. I appreciate the moment where they realize they don’t need to be scared of activity and moving their body. It is freeing and can be fun, something a lot of us forget to appreciate.

Mindful eating is important. If I’ve learned anything here that I wouldn’t have figured out on my own, it is the mindful eating part. This concept was almost foreign to me, but now it seems second nature. I am constantly thinking about how I’m feeling and whether or not I’m hungry or full. This process has helped me cut back on portions and control calories better than making arbitrary rules ever could. Our bodies know what they need and if we listen we will figure it out.

Asking for support is not a bad thing.
For some reason, a lot of us feel like we have to do everything ourselves. This is just not true. We are not dumber, or weaker, or anything else for seeking out professional help when we need it. Women who come here are not taking an easy way out or admitting they can’t do it on their own. They are saying, “I want to do this on my own. Help me.” And that is an amazing and strong thing to do.

I’ve learned a ton of other things here and experienced so much. I’m thankful for the experience and that I was able to share it for others. Thank you all for that opportunity!
