All women of course have fat, but cellulite is simply excess fat bursting through the connective tissues holding the fat layer in place.

    Mitchel Goldman, MD, an associate clinical professor at the University of California at San Diego regularly informs the dermatological community about cellulite treatments. On one such occasion in 2002, at American Academy of Dermatology’s summer scientific meeting in New York, Dr. Goldman offered bleak hope for women with fat dimples while asserting that there is no ?cure? for cellulite.

    Perhaps Dr. Goldman has never visited a women?s figure competition, Gold?s Gym or any placed packed with women who know how to take care of their bodies. If he did frequent such places, Dr. Goldman would find that there is indeed a three-step remedy for cellulite which follows:

    1.    Eat a macronutrient rich diet that maintains your ideal body weight;

    2.    Exercise at least 60 minutes daily to promote circulation and increase the skin?s elasticity and tone; and

    3.    Do resistance training to increase muscle size, boost fat metabolism, and increase structural support for the skin?s fat layer.

    I assure you that women who pose as models for cellulite creams and services already do these things.

    Notwithstanding, Dr. Goldman rests convinced that “Foods really do not have an impact on whether a woman has cellulite or not.” He further doubts dietary interventions by stating, ?Even a woman who radically changes her diet from high fat foods to low fat foods would still have cellulite. Consumers should be wary of any diet plan that claims to reduce the appearance of cellulite — it is simply not credible.”

    A study issued by the National Academies’ Institute of Medicine in 2002 recommends an hour of cumulative exercise each day to maintain a healthy weight. Granted the variety of weight lifting techniques remains endless, here?s some basic steps for increasing your muscle mass:

    Eat before lifting

    Eat at least 45 minutes before lifting weights. While, your stomach should not fill bloated with food, having some nutrients in your stomach will ensure that you have enough energy to actually lift the weight and perform enough repetitions to promote muscle growth.

    Lift enough weight to feel your muscle burn after 8-10 repetitions.

    The whole point of lifting weights is to tear down the muscle you have so that it will repair itself and grow back stronger and more plentiful. If you are not burning, it?s likely that you are not breaking down muscle.

    Refuel your muscles with protein and carbohydrates immediately after lifting weights

    8) Fruit juices can be very sweet and high in sugar content, so water them down

    9) Add more fish to you diet, fish not prepared with batter and breading that is. Fish
    has omega 3 fatty acids which help reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. So
    add fish to your weekly diet, at least twice a week is best.

    10) Experiment regularly with new recipes so you add new food and experience in
    your meal planning. Eating the same old things like hamburgers and pizza can
    equal boredom and cause overeating to try to get your fill for something more.

    11) Add more veggies into you daily eating. Try new dips, sauces and fun ways to
    cook and serve them.

    12) Fresh veggies don’t stay fresh too long. And that can be a difficult dilemma for
    those who don’t have a lot of time to shop. So try adding a quick veggies stop in
    weekly with a special errand so that you stop at a local farm market or at least the
    produce section once a week: combine this trip with your weekly bank deposit or
    post office visit, for example.

    13) Practice alternative cooking means than frying: broiling, microwave, steaming,
    crock pot with rack, toaster oven with rack, grilling, etc.

    14) Substitute water for beverages at home and when eating out, even diet drinks.
    Plenty of fast food joints and good restaurants serve flavored waters. Ask for
    lemon, if nothing else, in your water. And stock up on lemons and limes at home.
    Skip the diet pop.

    15) Experiment with new veggies, dressings, nuts and fruits in salads to make your
    meals more interesting, tasty and varied. Try home-made salad dressing recipes,
    different colored peppers, dried and fresh fruits, different types of lettuce and
    other goodies.

    16) Choose wheat bread over white.

    17) Substitute applesauce for oil in baking recipes.

    18) Use non-stick no-fat and low-fat cooking sprays instead of adding greasing. And
    bake on cooking sheets covered with aluminum foil, then sprayed fist, for easy
    clean up. Place a cooking rack on top of the cookie sheet, too, for allowing fat to
    drip off meats.

    19) Forget about super-sizing. No one needs that much food, especially junk food.
    Get smaller services and do ask for them. If you don’t ask or you just say
    something like, “I’ll have a coke and fries” with that, they’ll automatically supersize
    everything unless you say SMALL with coke and fries when you order. So
    re-learn how to order and do it!

    20) Use portion control, at home and outside the home. No one says you have to eat a
    whole sandwich, for example, especially if your work is sitting behind a computer
    where you aren’t doing heavy lifting or anything. So save half your sandwich for

    Then split up your meal and take half of it home for later.
    You can also ask for a child’s portion or order an appetizer in place of a regular
    adult meal. So experiment and watch not only calories and fat, but money you
    save.

    21) When you order out, order your dressing to be off to the side. Some places like
    Wendy’s are known to load on the mayo, tarter sauce and other toppings. And you
    don’t need all that fat. So get your toppings off to the side and add them yourself
    sparingly.

    22) Bake with cocoa instead of chocolate; for example use 3 tablespoons of
    unsweetened cocoa powder for each ounce of unsweetened chocolate.

    23) Substitute nonfat or low fat yogurt for sour cream in salad dressings and other
    recipes.

    24) Add some flavor to low fat and no fat recipes and food choices to make them
    more appealing: herbs and spices like garlic, basil, ginger, onion or onion powder,
    oregano and tarragon. Look in cookbooks and also try your own combinations.

    Healthy Recipes

    Fried Rice
    Ingredients
    3 cups Cauliflower, grated
    3 Green onions, chopped
    4 Cloves garlic, minced
    3 tbsp Low-sodium soy sauce
    1 tsp Garlic salt
    3 Eggs, beaten
    Oil
    4 cups Rice

    Preparation
    In a large pan, heat enough oil to cover bottom of pan. Fry minced garlic and onions
    (white bulbs, not green stems) for 2 min. Add grated cauliflower and fry 5 min, while
    you stir constantly. Next add soy sauce, garlic salt, green onion stems and stir until
    mixed. Place all off to the side of pan. Then scramble eggs, adding a little more oil if
    needed, in the empty side of pan until it’s done, yet still moist. Then stir the eggs into
    the rice mixture and remove from heat. Makes two servings in approximately 15
    minutes.

    Mixed Vegetable Variety
    Ingredients:
    Large tomato
    White pumpkin
    Onion
    Carrot
    Potato small
    3 cups Water
    (Pressure-cook all the above ingredients and keep it aside)
    Carrot
    Capsicum
    Spring onion sprig
    Cabbage leaves
    (Chop all these vegetables)
    Plus:
    1 tbsp Butter
    2 tbsp Boiled, drain pasta (any kind like: noodles, macaroni, spaghetti, etc.)
    2 tbsp Red garlic sauce
    ½ tsp Ginger grated
    1 tbsp Tomato ketchup
    Salt and Pepper to taste

    Preparation
    Blend the above pressure-cooked vegetables in a mixer and strain. The heat butter in
    a pan, add ginger and stir. Mix in the chopped vegetables and stir-fry the mixture for
    approx. 3 minutes. Mix in pureed stock and bring to a boil. Add all of the other
    ingredients, then stir and simmer for roughly 3 minutes. Makes two servings in
    approximately 15 minutes.

    Banana Power
    Ingredients:
    4 Ripe bananas
    1 tsp Lemon juice
    1 tsp Oil
    2 tbsp Honey
    2 tbsp Sesame seeds

    Preparation
    Brush peeled bananas with oil, and then with lemon juice. Place them in oiled baking
    pan and drizzle them with honey and then sprinkle them with sesame seeds. Broil all
    for about 6 minutes until heated throughout and browned, and until the sesame seeds
    toasted. Makes two servings in approximately 15 minutes.

    Healthy Chocolate Shake
    Mix in blender:
    ¼ cup Cream
    ¼ cup Cottage cheese (optional)
    ¼ cup Egg substitute
    ½ cup Water – ½ cup
    1 tbsp Cocoa – 1 tbsp
    2 tbsp sugar substitute
    2 tbsp Low carb protein powder

    Preparation
    Blend a few minutes until all is well mixed, and then add up to 8 ice cubes, blending
    one in at a time. A super drink for two in approximately 10 minutes.

    Healthy Vegetable Soup
    Ingredients
    9 spinach leaves
    5 leaves just below cauliflower
    3 coriander leaves
    1 small onion
    1 Stalk of celery
    1 tbsp Ginger peeled and crushed
    1 clove Garlic crushed
    1 tsp Corn flour
    ¼ Dried red chilly crushed
    ½ tsp Sugar
    Salt to taste
    ½ tsp Soya sauce
    ½ tsp Oil
    21/2 cups Water

    Preparation
    Clean all vegetables and stems. Chop vegetables making them into thin slanted
    slivers. Heat the oil in a pan and add ginger garlic. Sauté for one minute. Next add
    vegetables and stir fry until tender. Then add water and bring to a boil. Mix in corn
    flour with 1/2 cup cold water, then add to soup. Stir continuously until it comes to a
    boil, then add the salt, sugar, chilly and soy sauce. Boil until it thickens. Serve fresh
    and hot. Makes two servings in approximately 15 minutes

    Skin Deep; Is This the End for Cellulite? Some Doctors Say, ‘Fat Chance’

    CELLULITE is the archenemy of cosmetic medicine. Dermatologists have tried melting it with lasers. Plastic surgeons have tried vacuuming it through liposuction. Spa technicians have tried breaking it apart with vigorous massage. And cosmetics makers have concocted countless creams and gels to miraculously make it vanish.

    But cellulite, that dimpled, ”orange peel” skin on the hips, thighs and posteriors of almost all women older than 35, and many younger ones, has remained an incurable nuisance. Still, new treatments keep coming, usually at some cost to patients’ bank accounts and doctors’ credibility.

    One treatment is mesotherapy. French doctors have used it for more than 50 years, not only to treat cellulite but also to promote weight loss and alleviate migraine headaches and chronic pain. But mesotherapy has just recently reached critical mass in the United States.

    Many doctors oppose the practice, but the number who practice it (and of course defend it) is much larger. It has grown from a handful five years ago to thousands today, said Dr. A. Peter Salas, a plastic surgeon in New York City who has begun studies of the treatment and who often lectures about it to other physicians. ”I’d say that about 3,000 to 5,000 doctors are doing it, or have at least tried it,” Dr. Salas said.

    The procedure involves injecting a cocktail of medicines and other substances into the mesoderm, the layer of fat and connective tissue under the skin where cellulite resides. A fine-gauge needle is used, so that dozens of injections can be made in a single patch of cellulite. Theoretically these dissolve the cellulite and cause it to drain through the lymph system.

    The concept sounds plausible, even to some doctors who do not practice mesotherapy. But no evidence demonstrates that it works.

    ”We don’t have any science whatsoever,” said Dr. Alan Matarasso, a plastic surgeon at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, who wrote a report on mesotherapy for the April 15 issue of The Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. ”There are at least four studies in the works but no conclusive findings. We keep an open mind about these things, but right now, we just don’t know.”

    Dr. Matarasso did find several reports in the medical literature about bacterial infections caused by mesotherapy, however. Typically these required drug treatment or in some cases surgery to remove the infection.

    His report warns plastic surgeons not to experiment with mesotherapy until studies can determine whether the drugs involved are safe when injected under the skin and, if they do dissolve cellulite, what happens to the fat. ”Where is the fat going, and what are the injections doing to it?” Dr. Matarasso asked. ”We don’t know if it’s being excreted, or if it’s going to the liver.”

    Dr. Rod J. Rohrich, a plastic surgeon at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, was more dismissive in the editorial he wrote to accompany Dr. Matarasso’s journal article: ”It is mind-boggling to think that a physician would inject patients — or that patients would allow physicians to inject them — with unknown, unproved substances based on hearsay and unsubstantiated clinical findings.”

    Whether women will heed these words of caution is anyone’s guess. But the history of cellulite treatment suggests that lack of scientific certainty may not be enough to put the technology out of business, especially when the doctors who practice it say it works.

    ”In my opinion it’s remarkably safe, and the only thing that I’ve seen that works for cellulite,” said Dr. Martin Braun, a dermatologist in Vancouver, British Columbia.

    Dr. Lionel Bissoon, an osteopathic physician in New York City who was among the first to introduce mesotherapy to the United States, said: ”There’s a 90 percent success rate with mesotherapy treating cellulite. Once the studies are done, they will speak for themselves.”

    Dr. Braun argued that the only reason the technique has not been better studied is that pharmaceutical companies, which provide most of the financing for new cosmetic medical treatments, are unwilling to pay for research into a strategy that uses no new, patentable medicines.

    Cellulite is made of fat that lies just under the skin and pushes outward from the web of collagen fibers that connect the skin to underlying tissue. (Virtually all women, even thin ones, have this layer of fat.)

    With age, and with fluctuations in estrogen, the fibers contract, forcing the plump fat to bulge out — much as the down in a comforter bulges between quilted seams — and creating the notorious dimpled look of cellulite. Poor circulation is thought to make matters worse, by causing fluids to pool in the fat pockets.

    The medicines and other agents injected into the cellulite during mesotherapy include asthma drugs (aminophillin and isopropenol) to break up fat cells, enzymes (collagenase and hyaluronidase) to dissolve the connective fibers, anti-inflammatory medicines to limit pain and swelling, and agents that dilate the blood and lymph vessels to increase circulation (such as melilotus, an extract of sweet clover). Doctors sometimes also mix in lidocaine, a painkiller.

    Mesotherapy concoctions are typically custom-formulated for individual practitioners at compounding pharmacies.

    The Food and Drug Administration has not approved any substance specifically for mesotherapy, but many of the drugs used have been approved for other purposes: treating lung diseases, for example, or heart problems. The injection guns also have been federally approved for other purposes. The agency does not regulate medical procedures.

    Those performing mesotherapy often are not plastic surgeons or dermatologists, but family practitioners or emergency room doctors looking to expand their practices, Dr. Matarasso said.

    The actual treatment takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour — to cover an area about the size of two hands. The patient remains conscious, but a topical numbing cream or licocaine is often used to dampen pain. Then the doctor inserts the needle — to a depth of less than a third of an inch — several dozen times. Afterward the patient may see some bruising at the injection sites.

    In addition to infection– which should not occur if the skin is adequately cleaned before the procedure, Dr. Salas said — side effects may include sores or scarring. These happen when the practitioner fails to insert the needle deep enough to reach the mesoderm, Dr. Braun said.

    The price range for a session is $800 to $1,500, and 6 to 10 sessions are typically recommended. The incremental cost can make it seem more affordable than liposuction, which costs at least $5,000 a pop, Dr. Matarasso said.

    Given that liposuction is already considered largely ineffective against cellulite, mesotherapy may also have the advantage to some of being an unknown. When it comes to cellulite, hope never dies.
